schilder van een eigen wereld. Humor, verwondering en weemoed, het zijn de trefwoorden in het werk van de Utrechtse schilder Jan Tinholt.
artist and creator of his own world Humour, astonishment and melancholy are key words that typify the art of the Utrecht born painter Jan Tinholt. He started as a talented part-time painter of primitive art and has progressed to the stage of a talented and contemporary Dutch surrealist in a very personal, primitive style, working in oils. The subjects of his paintings, inspired by his sub-conscious and early life experiences, cannot be categorised as impressionist or expressionist. His style of painting is much too orderly for either of these categories. He also controls his unbridled imagination and choice of scenes by placing his subjects in nicely created landscapes with carefully cut lawns and trimmed hedges and trees. He also depicts his dream world: landscapes as a backdrop for slightly weird and playful characters. These characters are, in general, preoccupied with a variety of seemingly random things to do, but which are done with complete seriousness. It is this combination of order, phantasy and comical situations that combine the atmosphere of humour and melancholy in Jan Tinholts paintings.
